The Band of 1972
There were originally only nine members in the band - one drum major, four pipers, and four snares. The uniform was a navy blue jacket and trousers and a cadet cap. At this time none of the players had knowledge of playing pipes or drums. In the initial stages of the learning process, Pipe Major James Caution, a world-renowned pipe band competition judge, was hired to teach pipes and snares, as well as marching. The music that was learnt and played by the band included religious tunes, Scottish tunes and famous Indian melodies.
The First Performance
In 1972, His Holiness Swamibapa sat in continuous meditation for 61 days during which Purna Purushottam Lord Swaminarayan Himself commanded Swamibapa to give physical embodiment to the supreme Shree Swaminarayan Gadi. In October of that year, to mark the momentous event in the history of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, a great festival
(Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sthapna) was held in Maninagar, Ahmedabad, India and it was during this festival that the band had its inaugural performance.
