The city of Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah on 26 February 1411. To commemorate the historical event of Ahmedabad’s 600th Anniversary, Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan held a ‘Heritage Walk’ on Friday 25th February 2011. Acharya Swamishree, sants and a group of over 400 people took the 2 and a half hour guided walk through some of Ahmedabad’s historical sites, including Kavishwar Dalpatram Chowk, Lambeshwar Ni Pole, Relief Road, and the Jama Masjid.
UNESCO is currently deciding on whether to grant Ahmedabad the status of ‘Heritage City’. If they do, it will become the first city in India to attain this accolade.
At the Jama Masjid, Acharya Swamishree led prayers together with representatives of the other Hindu and Muslim Faiths, for world stability and peace. On behalf of Mufti Shabbir Alam Siddiqui, who leads the prayers in the Jama Masjid, his son, presented a silver memento to Acharya Swamishree.
This event was the first of its kind in the city. Although the Heritage Walk of Ahmedabadis has been held by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation since 1997, this was the first time that a religious leader had led the event to promote the advancement of the city.
