Cultural Performances of Dance and Music, Held at the Ladies Temple in Maninagar

At a time when society oppressed women and regarded them as being second class citizens, Lord Shree Swaminarayan instilled the understanding within disciples to honour and respect them. Practices such as the act of 'sati' (the killing of a widow on her husband’s funeral pyre) and 'doodh piti' (the drowning of a newly born daughter in milk), were eliminated from society by Lord Shree Swaminarayan's command. Lord Shree Swaminarayan encouraged women to be educated. This had never previously been considered.

Just as Lord Shree Swaminarayan created an order of ascetic males, He also created a separate class of ascetic women, Sankhya-yogis, to convey the religious teachings to other women, and give them initiation into the religion. Separate temples were created for women, which were run by the women themselves. This provided security for women from the scandalous and corrupt practices of the time whereby the merciless religious authorities used their authority to subjugate women. Lord Shree Swaminarayan ensured that women were given dignity and honour.

As part of Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Shatabdi (Centenary), the honourable Sankhya-yogi ladies living in the Ladies Temple in Maninagar had a wish that a grand function in honour of Jeevanpran Swamibapa should be held in the Ladies Temple. Consequently, a 2 day function, comprising of scripture recitals, spiritual music and devotional dance, was held on 30 and 31 March 2007. A stage was built near the Ladies Temple, from where the function took place. A grand procession was also held as part of these festivities.
