On Saturday 24 January, Shree Swaminarayan Mandirs around the world celebrated the 189th anniversary since Lord Shree Swaminarayan gifted the world His book of holy commandments, the Shikshapatri.
On Vasant Panchmi (Vikram calendar date of writing the Shikshapatri), disciples gather in Mandirs to jointly recite the entire scripture – 212 verses of rules and stipulations that serve to benefit everyone in society. At Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury, hundreds of disciples young and old gathered in the evening to join the collective reading of the Shikshapatri scripture. Everyone had bought in their personal copies of the scripture to follow the reading; many used e-readers, tablets and smartphones to follow the recital, as is the modern way.
