Shakotsav

A divine episode performed by Lord Shree Swaminarayan some 200 years ago was re-enacted by Acharya Swamishree Maharaj on Saturday 31 May. Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Complex was briefly converted to a village market – “Kutchbury” rather than Kingsbury, as Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury hosted Shakotsav.

Through the Shakotsav episode of Samvat 1877 (1820 CE, Kartik Vad 10 in Loya), the Lord taught us about the importance of servitude by preparing and serving aubergine curry Himself to the gathered disciples – no other Guru had performed anything like this before.

The events at Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kutchbury began with Acharya Swamishree Marahaj arriving just after 6pm, presiding on a traditional cart that was drawn by the sponsors of the event. As He wound through the market, He picked up all the items He would need to cook the curry and rotla – aubergines, spices, flour and even cooking utensils - from the market stalls that had been erected. Once at the main stage, which resembled a 200 year old kitchen, the sponsoring disciples and other senior representatives performed poojan and aarti to Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa and Acharya Swamishree Maharaj.

Acharya Swamishree Maharaj then commenced the cooking with the aubergine curry, mixed some buttermilk and even fetched water from the well – all to the delight of the hundreds that had gathered for this amazing darshan. The youngest students of Shree Muktjeevan Academy of Excellence performed a short play to explain the Shakotsav episode during the Lord’s time so that everyone in the audience, young and old, could understand its importance.

Once the curry had cooked, Acharya Swamishree Maharaj offered some to the Lord before the entire congregation enjoyed and evening Prasad meal. Acharya Swamishree Maharaj continued to delight the crowd by having His and the sants’ evening meal on the stage so everyone could enjoy this unique darshan.
