What is Gurupoonam?

He who enlightens the ignorant, i.e. shines light to those in darkness, is called a Guru. It is only Lord SwaminarayanBapa Swamibapa that can enlighten us ignorant souls to the supreme bliss of eternal happiness, the endless peace of the supreme Lord. Thus our supreme Guru can only be Lord SwaminarayanBapa Swamibapa.

Tuesday 7th July 2009 marked Ashadh Sud Poonam, Gurupoonam, a day dedicated to one’s Guru. His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree held the Gurupoonam celebrations at Shree Swaminarayan Temple, London and fulfilled the humble prayers of UK disciples of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan.

Shree Muktajeevan Pipe Band led Acharya Swaminshree and Gurudev Jeevanpran Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa, seated on a decorated palanquin, into the Temple and saluted them. Acharya Swamishree then performed poojan to Jeevanpran Swamibapa, and adorned Him with beautiful flower garments and garlands, before performing Panchamrut snan (ceremonial bathing with five nectars) at the Lords feet.

Acharya Swamishree and Sants performed aarti to Jeevanpran Swamibapa and the Gurupoornima Kirtan was recited, before the congregation listened to Jeevanpran Swamibapa’s divine ashirwad.

Acharya Swamishree then bestowed His divine blessings during which He explained the significance of this day and explicated the importance of attaining the true Guru, Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa and remaining obedient to His commands.

Acharya Swamishree explained that by following the command of our Guru, we acquire spiritual knowledge that enables us to sleep properly and attain the murti of the Lord (i.e. peace through salvation). The ordinary people in this world would see sleeping, eating, drinking etc. as peace but this is not true peace. True peace can only be acquired by following
the command of one's guru and attaining the murti of the Lord. Acharya Swamishree also explained that one should only do bhakti (devotion) to please the Lord and for the moksh (salvation) of his soul but not to attain worldly objects such as wealth or sons. A guru is not there to fulfill worldly desires, but to lead us to the true path of salvation.

Everyone then had the privilege of performing aarti and poojan to Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa and Acharya Swamishree before receiving prasad (consecrated offering) from Acharya Swamishree to complete the special day’s ceremonies.

These celebrations were broadcast live over the internet.
