What is a Temple?
A temple, or Mandir, is the name given to the house of God. The word Mandir is originally comes from a Sanskrut word, which means where the mind becomes still.
Lord Swaminarayan has said in the Vachanamrut, that He preferred being by himself in the forests away from people; however, in order to make the religion flourish, He came to live amongst the people and created magnificent Temples.
These words of the Lord indicate the importance of Temples; in order that the people remain spiritually happy, Lord Swaminarayan created grand Temples. And for this very reason, our beloved Acharya Swamishree is still inspiring the creation of magnificent Temples around the world.
Once a Temple is built, Acharya Swamishree performs a ceremony to install the divine Murtis. This is called the Murti Pratishtha. Only Acharya Swamishree can perform this ceremony. Due to Acharya Swamishree’s request, the almighty Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa comes to live in the Temple. The Murtis are no longer paintings or statues.
They are the supreme Lord God Himself.
