Shree Muktajeevan Sports Academy (SMSA) based in Shree Swaminarayan Temple Golders Green, hosted London Development Authority’s (LDA) Winter of Sport program at the Jewish Free School in Kingsbury on Saturday 18th and Sunday the 19th April 2009.
Boys and girls from the ages of 4 – 16 participated in free coaching sessions and games across a range of sports including Cricket, Football, Netball and Badminton.
Professional in-house coaching was provided by Shree Muktajeevan Sports Academy. Each of the four sessions ran simultaneously lasting for two and a half hours.
The sessions were broken down into:
- Basic fitness training
- Drills and exercises related to the sport
- Specific Technique conditioning
- Matches and mini tournaments
Through this the children developed their communication and teamwork skills whilst developing their technical performance. This proved to be crucial as some of the children hadn’t previously had the opportunity to play these sports.
The winter of sports program is in place to provide taster sessions to children in a safe and secure environment with the ultimate aim being that they take up the sport on a regular basis. The majority of the funding comes from the LDA, with the SMSA contributing to the overall cost.
SMSA will continue to support the LDA as the vast benefits of these programs have already been seen. These include greater participation at grassroots level and better teamwork and communication skills. The academy has also been able to identify children with natural abilities and is working with parents to further develop these potential child prodigies.
In total ninety children took part in the Winter of Sport’s weekend. We hope to increase the number for the LDA’s next program which will be the Summer of Sports in August 2009.
