Shree Swaminarayan Temple Rises to the Challenge for Sport Relief

Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Golders Green hosted a Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 16 March 2008. Over 200 people from the local community signed up to support this worthy cause. Before the run commenced, the crowds were entertained by Shree Muktajeevan Pipe Band, an all Asian, traditional Scottish bagpipe band. Members of Shree Muktajeevan Dhol Academy also entertained the runners as they warmed up in preparation for the run.

Hendon Sainsburys Store Manager, Mr Nick Gilbody gave the countdown for the participants to start the race. The runners ran 1, 3 or 6 miles. As they crossed the finish line, they were given a befitting salute and warmly welcomed by Shree Muktajeevan Pipe Band. The total amount of money raised through this event will not be known for another few weeks.

The Temple in Golders Green actively encourages, hosts and promotes an array of charitable, educational and sporting activities. The Temple has a history of supporting mainstream charitable causes, and highlights issues of social importance, by holding regular health awareness seminars and workshops. During the past 3 years alone, through various fund-raising events organised in conjunction with the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity, over £35,000 was raised by the Temple.

Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better. By doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can feel good by doing good. Comic Relief spends the money raised to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.
