Great North Swim - Lake Windermere

On Sunday 15th June, 14 swimmers from Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury joined the thousands plunging into the cold waters of Lake Windermere for the Great North Swim. Funds raised by these “Swaminarayan Swimmers” brought the total so far raised for the St Luke’s Hospice to £24,000 in less than three months, and the Midnight Walk on 27th June will again add to that total. This and other charity projects form part of the wider campaign in the lead up to the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury Grand Opening festival.

For the disciples of Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury, Lake Windermere holds special significance and is considered a sacred site of pilgrimage because Gurudev Jeevanpran Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa spent His last day here before departing from this mortal world in 1979. After the Swim, the team visited Swamibapa Hill in Bowness-on-Windermere to pay tribute to our beloved Gurudev.

All 14 swimmers completed the gruelling one mile challenge, despite some having taken to open water only weeks ago. All the swimmers were novices in open water and so this was a huge personal achievement for them both physically and spiritually. Their story - our Mandir’s Grand Opening and the significance of Windermere to our community - captured the attention of the event media team and the Swaminarayan Swimmers. Having been shadowed by the production crew during their weekend in Windermere, our swimmers will feature heavily in the Great Swim highlights programme that will air on Channel 4 in September.
