Inspirator: His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree Purushottampriyadasji Maharaj
Mumbai Mahotsav - Day 1 - Morning

The Festival of Unity and Compassion began with the recital of the Shree Swaminarayan Gadi scripture. His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree then gave His darshan on a beautifully decorated horse-drawn chariot, led by Shree Muktajeevan Pipe Band. Young disciples from Mumbai performed a dance to the kirtan, Subh Swagatam. This dance was performed by 54 young boys and girls.

The chief guest for the morning congregation was Jagatguru Sankracharya Maharaj, who took part in the official opening of the 3 day mahotsav by lighting the flame of peace with Acharya Swamishree.

Acharya Swamishree's Divine Ashirwad

  • The centenary (Shatabdi) of our guru, Jeevanpran Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa continues to be commemorated throughout the world. This festival in Mumbai is another facet of these wonderful celebrations.
  • It is the wish of every disciple of the Lord to be at this Mahotsav, but some sants have remained in various places to serve the Lord, while other disciples have not been able to attend. Let us pray to the supreme Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa that He keeps all these disciples with Him during this auspicious occasion.
  • Today is the 6th day of the 4th month. This is symbolic of the 6-syllabled supreme mantra, Swaminarayan, being spread in all four directions.
  • The Shree Swaminarayan Gadi scripture is being recited on this occasion. How great is this scripture? By attentively listening to its recital, the highest status is achieved; the cycle of birth and death is surpassed; the bliss of God is experienced while still in this body; and the Lord’s Murti is attained. Such is the power of this scripture. It is a magnificently shining, divine gem.
  • Pure sentiments arise in the hearts of anyone who enters this Swaminarayan Temple. This is because the divine presence of the Lord inspires such pure sentiments, which in turn, leads to internal peace. Everyone is in search of such tranquillity; even those who live in this bustling city of Mumbai, seek such peace.
  • In order to attain peace in one’s mind, worldly thoughts must be eradicated. People who are engrossed in worldly thoughts think that such thoughts are insignificant products of the mind. However, they do not realise that such thoughts that continuously arise, somehow always manifest themselves externally. Thoughts arise first in the mind, but always result in actions thereafter. If a person’s thoughts are arrogant and greedy, his actions will be desirous and self-gratifying. If his thoughts are pure and pious, he will be able to please God and attain piece in his mind. The mind, which is used to doing as it pleases, must therefore be tamed.
  • When the mind is tamed with such dedication, one develops the strength to remain indifferent to happiness or pain, which is itself, peace in the mind.
  • There is a saying that trees do not mature quickly. Hence, it is important to maintain dedication, faith and continuous endeavour in order attain anything worthwhile, i.e. the eradication of inappropriate thoughts.
  • A disciple of God, who had developed such an indifference to pleasures or pain, was Veera Sheladiya. On one occasion, he departed to Gadhada, along with his cart and family, for the darshan of Shreejimaharaj. In his absence, his enemies burnt down his house. On his return after five or six days, he saw that all but his grain store had been reduced to ashes. One of the enemies said to Veera, “What benefit did you derive from going to Gadhada? Your house is destroyed!” Veera replied, “Lord Shree Swaminarayan has indeed favoured me. Because, when I went for His darshan, my wife, children, cart and bull were all saved. And look! Even the grain has been saved. The Lord has taken great pity on me, and he has saved me from much pain.” Having seen such patience, tolerance and steadfastness in the disciple Veera, even the hearts of his enemies melted.
  • Let us pray to the supreme Lord Shree Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa, that we too are able to maintain this kind of sturdiness by always thinking in such a correct manner. And in this way, no matter what we encounter, may we always remain under the shelter of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi.
  • We are gathered in this metropolis of Mumbai to celebrate the joy of Jeevanpran Swamibapa’s centenary. We know that people come to such immense cities to work, for business or to spend. Everyone wants peace in their minds, but they become so engrossed with themselves, how can they possibly find peace?
  • There was a man that became frustrated with his family. He went to his courtyard to sit on a swing in order to find some peace. As he swung, he became frustrated with the sound of the swing creaking. So he left the swing and went for a ride on his motorbike. The silencer on his ‘bike malfunctioned. He became frustrated at this and discarded his bike to go for a walk in a nearby park. There was a wedding parade passing through the park, and the sound of fireworks annoyed the man and so he went elsewhere for a walk. In his frustration, he walked into a cyclist. He became angry and tried to hit the cyclist. However, the cyclist was stronger punched him twice. Due to his lack of ability to do anything about it, he simply sat down. In this way, everyone is aimlessly looking for this elusive tranquillity.
  • If someone thinks about it thoroughly, he will realise that this life is an incredible gift from Lord Shree Swaminarayan. Just as the man was frustrated with the sounds of the creaking swing and faulty silencer, how can we expect Shree Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa like our worldly behaviour, and our affinity for our relations? In order to avoid displeasing God in this way, when the intellect tries persuading one down an inappropriate path, one must do as the soul says, i.e. one must do as Lord Shree Swaminarayan says, who resides within one’s soul.
  • One’s ego is the barrier to attaining peace. A person may have great power – he may even be able to evade death. But due to his ego, he will never attain peace.
  • Today, when someone falls, he does so with his eyes open. Meaning that he does so knowingly. Such people are despicable fools. Shreejimaharaj has stated in the 55th Vachanamrut of Gadhada First Section, if someone sits with his arms around a drunken prostitute, how can he ask God ‘why did you not restrain my mind’? Someone who thinks in this manner is incredibly idiotic.
  • If we do not have purity in our actions and affairs, we will have only frustration and conflict in our lives.
  • Jeevanpran Swamibapa has shown mercy on us and given us a birth as a human. Moreover, he has taken us under the shelter of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi. It is therefore our responsibility to not become ensnared with the frustrations of life, but instead live pious lives to attain bliss and peace. Let us pray to Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa to give us the divine strength to do so.
