The City of Mumbai

Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the state of Maharashtra. Located on Salsette Island in the Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Maharashtra, it is the most populated city in India, with a population of approximately 25 million.

Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India, and is home to many important financial institutions, such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the corporate headquarters of many Indian companies.

The city is also home to India's Hindi film, music and television industry, known as Bollywood.

Due to its location, people who are going abroad to Africa, America, the Arab States, or Europe, or returning to India have generally use Mumbai as the city for embarkation. In addition, due to its superb medical facilities, people travel to Mumbai for treatment. Various government offices, embassies and immigration services are also located in Mumbai. Therefore, people living in India generally have to visit Mumbai at some stage in their life; and for those Indians living abroad, it is a convenient city to land at. From the days of the British Raj, Mumbai was the main administration centre of India.

It was Jeevanpran Swamibapa’s wish that a grand centre of the divine Karan Satsang, from where spirituality and charity could be disseminated to all, should be established in this important city. Fulfilling Jeevanpran Swamibapa’s wishes, His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree established Shree Swaminarayan Temple, in the prestigious region of Mahalaxmi, in 1989.

History

Although Lord Shree Swaminarayan never actually visited Mumbai whilst He gave darshan upon this Earth, there are several instances when He has sent His sants and disciples for preaching about the Faith and to perform various official duties in this region. Furthermore, various eminent disciples during the time of Sadguru Shree Gopalanand Swamibapa and in particular, whilst Jeevanpran Bapashree and Sadguru Shree Ishwarcharandasji Swamibapa gave darshan, are known to have lived in Mumbai.

In His childhood years, Jeevanpran Swamibapa lived in Kheda with His father Muljibhai and Ichhaba. Muljibhai was a key government official, and had to travel to Mumbai frequently. After completing His education in Ahmedabad, Jeevanpran Swamibapa went to Mumbai to work. There, He attended the temple in the Bhuleshwar region of Mumbai. It was there that Jeevanpran Swamibapa met Khimjibhai Darji of Rampara and Jagjeevanbhai of Sayla, who were ardent followers of Jeevanpran Bapashree. In this manner, Jeevanpran Swamibapa was first introduced to Shree Abji Bapashree and Sadguru Shree Ishwarcharandasji Swamibapa in Mumbai. After this, Jeevanpran Swamibapa accepted initiation as a sant from Shree Ishwarcharandasji Swamibapa and became the protector and propagator of Lord Shree Swaminarayan and Jeevanpran Bapashree’s sublime principles throughout the world.

Need for a Temple in Mumbai

Jeevanpran Swamibapa’s disciples were devout adherents to the strict disciplines decreed by Lord Shree Swaminarayan. Whenever they travelled to or from abroad, or had important official administrative duties to complete, they had to go to Mumbai. However, they found it very difficult to find appropriate facilities where they could live in and eat according to the requirements of the Swaminarayan Faith. Jeevanpran Swamibapa also had to travel to Mumbai on a frequent basis. In the early years, the homes of disciples would be emptied and Swamibapa would live there. Taking into consideration all the difficulties, Jeevanpran Swamibapa decided that our Organisation needed a building of its own. After looking for many months, a bungalow was purchased in the Walkeshwar district of Mumbai.

Subsequently, in 1967, two adjacent flats were purchased in the district of Babulnath. This comprised of appropriate accommodation for a small Temple, for Jeevanpran Swamibapa to live in when He was in Mumbai, for the sants to reside in, and for disciples to stay when they travelled to and from India. Jeevanpran Swamibapa performed the Murti Pratishtha in this Temple on Wednesday 13 June 1967.

Shikhar-bandh Temple

Although Jeevanpran Swamibapa had established a small Temple in Mumbai, He immediately asked the sants and disciples to locate suitable land to build a grand, Shikhar-bandh Temple this city.

Eventually, a large plot was identified in the region of Mahalaxmi, on Bhulabhai Desai Road. One of Mumbai’s most sacred and revered old temples is the Mahalaxmi temple, which is located at the seashore on the northern side of Mumbai’s Malabar Hills. Before visiting that temple, one has to leave Bhulabhai Desai Road and enter a small side street. The corner of that street is the location of the plot of land, where Acharya Swamishree created the new Shree Swaminarayan Temple.

Before the Temple was built, that one plot of land was home to numerous lawless gangs, who had illegally occupied the makeshift dwellings that were situated there. Anyone who passed through that side street after sunset would undoubtedly be looted and hurt. By creating a new Temple there, Acharya Swamishree has completely transformed the entire region of Mahalaxmi. Local officials of Mumbai have hailed this transformation as a miracle; and have attributed this beneficial revolution of the locality to Acharya Swamishree.

On 26 February 1984, Acharya Swamishree performed the ground breaking ceremony at the site. Building work then commenced under the direction of Sadguru Shree Uttampurushdasji Swami and Shree Divyadarshandasji Swami. When clearing the land, and during the building work, various difficulties were encountered, but by the divine grace of Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa and Acharya Swamishree, all these troubles were overcome. On 17 April 1989, the sanctification (Vastu) ceremony was performed at the Temple.
