Much of Gujarat has faced torrential rainfall in the past week. Many rivers, including the Mahisagar, Shedhi, Vatrak and Vishwamitri have burst their banks, causing flooding over vast areas of land. The continual rains have damaged roads, including state and national highways at 3,700 locations. An estimated twenty million people have been affected by the torrential rains. The communication network throughout the region has also been severely affected. Much of Gujarat is a picture of marooned villages, damaged railway lines and waterlogged roads. Parts of Vadodara city and most areas of Anand and Kheda districts of south Gujarat are under 10-12 feet of water.
By the express command of the benevolent Acharya Swamishree, who is currently presiding in Canada, the Sants of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan have commenced a campaign to provide much needed help to the flood-affected people.
From Saturday 2nd July 2005, the Sants, parshads and disciples waded through flooded areas to reach the most isolated of villages throughout the districts of Mahemdavad, Kheda, Sanand and Vadodara, where they provided food packets, water pouches and chlorine tablets and bleaching powder to provide safe drinking water. For some people, the Sants provided them with their first meal for several days.
In addition to the relief work perfomed personally by the Sants, Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan has donated a considerable sum of money to the Flood Relief Campaign organised by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shree Narendra Modi. On Monday 4th July 2005, the mahant of Shree Swaminarayan Temple Maninagar, Sadguru Shashtri Shree Bhagwatpriyadasji Swami met the Chief Minister in Gandhinagar and presented him with the cheque. He also conveyed the message of support given by His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree for the relief efforts.
