The following is a press release from the Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan in the UK.

Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan – Earthquake Disaster Relief Campaign

The earthquake, which struck the Gujarat State of India on Friday, with its epicentre close to the town of Bhuj - Kutch, has resulted in a human tragedy on an unprecedented scale. Official figures released by the Indian High Commission - London have placed the death toll currently at around 20,000 and these figures could reach twice this number. Over a million people have been injured. There are reports of several towns that have been totally razed to the ground. The damage caused by the quake is estimated to cost over £1 billion.

Gujarati communities in Britain are holding special assemblies and prayers in their Temples. Many are also organising fund raising appeals to help the people of Gujarat.

The spiritual leader of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan, His Holiness Acharya Swamishree Purushottampriyadasji Maharaj, who recently celebrated the Festival for the Mind, Body and Soul at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Golders Green - London, was in Mehsana district of Gujarat when the disaster struck. He immediately set off for Bhuj with a convoy of food, water, blankets, and vital medicines and also to provide both financial and emotional relief for the victims of this catastrophe.

Shree Swaminarayan Temples, in Golders Green and Bolton have held special assemblies and prayers for the souls of the deceased and survivors. The first of these was on Sunday 28th January and another is to be held on Monday 29th January. Other special prayer assemblies will be arranged during this following week. At these gatherings, prayers were recited and donations pledged to ease the suffering of the people in India. Over £125,000 was raised from only those present, in only the short time of the assemblies.

Although the Gujarati community has been extremely generous in its pledges, funds for this type of disaster are never going to be enough. There is an immediate need for food grain, water purification tablets, medical supplies, tarpaulin for shelter and blankets, for over 1 million people who have been left homeless in the region. However, it is far more efficient to send funds.

People of all ages have volunteered to collect donations from homes, shopping centres, offices and stations in the vicinity of the Temples. The temples are also open as centres for donations.

Donations are being accepted at the Temple in Finchley Road. Payments can be made by cheques payable to "Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Earthquake Relief Fund", by phoning the Credit Card hotline number on 020 84585356, or through any high street bank quoting the following
account details:
