On 26th January 2001 a devastating earthquake measuring 6.9 on Richter scale hit the state of Gujarat in India with epicenter at Bhuj. One month after the earthquake official Government of India figures place the death toll at 19,727 and the number of injured at 166,000. Indications are that 600,000 people were left homeless, with 348,000 houses destroyed and an additional 844,000 damaged. The Indian State Department estimates that the earthquake affected, directly or indirectly, 15.9 million people out of a total population of 37.8 million. More than 20,000 cattle are reported killed. Government estimates place direct economic losses at $1.3 billion. Other estimates indicate losses may be as high as $5 billion.

This extraordinary calamity has resulted in the loss of precious life for numerous beings. The survivors have been left with the enduring task of re-building their lives. The faith and trust in the Lord, of millions of the god-fearing inhabitants of Western India has been tested to the ultimate.

His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree has ensured that physical, monetary, and spiritual assistance was given to all, regardless of class or faith.
"Daro nahi, kaame laago" (fear not, get to work).
These were the four words of His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree that gave strength, inspiration and encouragement to so many of the distressed people of Kutch.
Directly coordinated by His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree, Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Santhan was one of the first to start immediate relief work.
To ensure that eternal peace is bestowed upon all the lost souls who perished as a result of the earthquake, His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree has inspired the Saarvajanik Shanti Satra, held in the town of Kadi, Mehsana from the 12th to the 15th April 2001. During this Shanti Satra, prayers were be offered to the Supreme Lord SwaminarayanBapa Swamibapa, on behalf of all those that died. For the duration of the 4-day public remembrance assembly, His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree performed the ancient ritual of the peace Yagna.
