Aso Vad 30, is the last day of the Hindu year and is celebrated as the festival of Diwali. During the run up to this festival, fireworks are exploded; a symbol of the burning of evil, and the resurrection of good light, the truth and divinity of the Lord. Lamps are lit in homes and Temples. Rangolis, elaborate patterns are artistically created using powdered paint at the entrance of homes as a welcoming symbol. The sky during this night would be moonless, therefore the lighting of the lamps eradicate this darkness; yet another symbol of good over evil. The sentiment for a disciple of the Lord when lighting a lamp is to pray for forgiveness of past misdeeds and for spiritual strength and wisdom for the coming year so that he can please the Lord more and more.

On the day of Diwali, Tuesday 1st November 2005, His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree presided amongst a special assembly held in the Brahm Mahol of Shree Swaminarayan Temple Maninagar. After performing meditation, singing devotional songs and reciting the supreme name of the Lord, Acharya Swamishree bestowed His divine blessing over all. He spoke about the significance of the Diwali festival in the lives of a true disciple of the Lord. He said that just as everyone cleans their homes during this festive period, one must also remove the internal pollutants from within and become clean and pure; hence, one must become virtuous, and obedient to the wishes of the Lord.

On this day, it is traditional that the New Year's accounts are sanctified. The Laxmi poojan ceremony is performed to the account books. Laxmi is the deity of wealth. Therefore, if one performs this ceremony, Laxshmi, i.e. wealth will come to that individual during the year. For a disciple of the Lord, our great fortune is that we have attained the supreme Lord Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa and have become disciples of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi.

On this occasion, the sants made a special accounts ledger and presented it to Acharya Swamishree to sign. This book symbolised the fact that the Lord is forever analysing each of His disciples and making a note of the gain and loss of each person during each day, i.e. He keeps an account of how obedient each person is to the wish of the Lord. Acharya Swamishree mercifully signed this accounts book and sanctified it on behalf of us all.
