One of the most affluent areas of Gujarat is Surat. It is the second largest city in Gujarat and the ninth largest in India, having a population of approximately 4 million people.
The port city lies on the left bank of the River Tapi, 14 miles from its mouth. It is famous for its textile and diamond businesses. It is known as the ‘Diamond Capitol of the World’ because the skilled workers of Surat are reputed to cut and polish over 90% of the world's diamonds.
Shree Swaminarayan Mandir
Acharya Swamishree had a profound wish to establish a spiritual centre of our sublime Karan Satsang in Surat. This Mandir would provide a spiritual home for the disciples living in Surat and also be a centre for the charitable and socially beneficial activities of our Organisation in this region of Gujarat.
A large site on the main highway into Surat was purchased by Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan. The 1.5 acre land is situated near the Sarthana Jakatnaka, on the Surat-Kamrej Highway. Planning permission was obtained to build a large Shikhar-bandh Mandir, and on Friday 9 February 2007, Acharya Swamishree performed the ground breaking ceremony and laying of the foundation stone at the site. Construction of the grand temple then commenced.
