Lord Swaminarayan established this satsang over 200 years ago. He established temples at various locations around India. Sadguru Shree Gopalanand Swamibapa, Sadguru Shree Ishwarcharandasji Swamibapa and Sadguru Shree Nirgundasji Swamibapa carried on establishing new temples.

In 1944 Jeevanpran Shree Mukatajeevandasji Swamibapa installed the divine Murtis of Shree Ghanshyam Maharaj and Jeevanpran Bapashree at in Shree Swaminarayan Temple, Maninagar. The first Swaminarayan Temple outside of India was establish in Nairobi, Kenya by Jeevanpran Swamibapa. Jeevanpran Swamibapa later established temples in the UK and USA.

Today, Acharya Shree Purushottampriyadasji Swami has continued to setup new temples all around the world.
