The Mahotsav

The word Mahotsav, literally translated, means festival, but the essence and objectives of such an event are far more profound. Since the manifestation of Lord Swaminarayan in 1781AD, such Mahotsavs have been celebrated frequently through the world and thus, in conjunction with other activities, have propelled the Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan into a world-renowned and widely respected organisation.

Mahotsav create a zeal of devotion that warms the hearts of all who attend and partake. Behind the visible splendour and pageantry exist deep, thought provoking ideals that cater to sustain the subtle needs of all man's nature. The principle reason for the organisation of a Mahotsav is for peace (shanti) of the mind (maanseek), body (sarireek) and soul (aadhyatmik). The most fundamental tenet set out by Lord Swaminarayan was of non-violence and peace between all mankind. This philosophy has spread throughout the world by virtue of the compassion shown by the Acharya - spiritual leaders - of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi, currently His Divine Holiness Acharya Swamishree Purushotthampriyadasji Maharaj.

A Mahotsav has several core elements:

Spiritual
To create an atmosphere of purity and the prayers enlighten the soul. Further they replenish the devotees faith towards Lord Swaminarayan

Moral
To remind the devotees of their duties to Lord Swaminarayan and all mankind, the sacrifices and discipline required to satisfy Lord Swaminarayan.

Cultural
To provide the facilities to explore the traditions of the Santha and strengthen our cultural roots further

Social
To bring all men of different nationalities, races, religions and upbringings together to benefit from each other's diversities. Clinics are held for the less fortunate to receive treatment for eye conditions, obtain advice to overcome drug and alcohol addictions and to organise blood donor sessions

Together these elements enhance camaraderie between surrounding communities, bringing people together irrespective of their race, age or gender. Mahotsav reinforce the sense of community and brotherhood among devotees of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi, encouraging them to be charitable, moral and peaceful. More-over, such magnificent festivals promote and excel the Swaminarayan religion, thus attracting more followers to it's way of life, so they too may experience the benefits of sadachaar - a high level of moral conduct.
