Parayan
The
main programme of all Mahotsav is the parayan - the reading and recital
of religious scriptures. These scriptures contain the true principles
and standards to which a devotee of Shree Swaminarayan Gadi should endeavour
to follow in order to attain aatyantik moksh - ultimate salvation. After
the recitations, His Holiness Acharya Swamishree Purushottampriyadasji
Maharaj will give His aarshivad to the sabha (congregation) in which
he elucidates the true meanings of the texts together with instilling
the love and support required by the devotees to maintain sadachaar.
Nagaryatra
Another
principle event is the nagaryatra - a fantastic procession through the
surrounding streets. This spectacle aims to draw people together by
means of extravagant floats, music, dancing, fireworks as well as a
host of other activities. People from all walks of life are attracted
to the vibrant atmosphere the nagaryatra creates, spreading a feeling
of community and togetherness in all who partake. Women carry a kalas
- a sacred vase - on their heads throughout the parade, personifying
the theme of calm and tranquillity. The celebration is on occasions
referred to as a shanti yatra - a peace parade. The kalas represents
the peace between all humanity; a flower protruding from the vase embodies
the superlative rewards attained from abiding by such ideologies.
Dance and Theatrical
Performances
A
further central element is Bhakti Sangeet - an evening of culture, with
performances in traditional music, dancing and drama. Music is a language
common to all, hence such a night of entertainment becomes a blissful
event which is universally enjoyed. Also performed are theatre productions,
the themes of which embody the principles, such as devotion, non-violence,
non-conflict and morality, established by Lord Swaminarayan.
Benevolence
and Aid for the Needy

Lord
Swaminarayan manifested on this earth for the benefit of all mankind.
One of the ways in which He aided people is by freeing them from their
addictions and mal-habits such as the consumption of alcohol and drugs.
This benevolence has continued through the spiritual lineage of Shree
Swaminarayan Gadi. During Mahotsav periods, His Divine Holiness Acharya
Swamishree Purushotthampriyadasji Maharaj has compassionately instigated
and promoted drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinics and charities.
By donating substantial funds and attracting publicity to such schemes,
He personally partakes in activities beneficial to society, not only
involving rehabilitation, but also raising awareness in health, environmental
and educational issues.
