Shravan - Holy Month

In Hinduism, the most sacred of all the months is Shravan, which usually falls in July or August. This is the 10th month of the Hindu calendar and is the first whole month of the Chaturmas season of fasting and observing additional vows.

In the Shikshapatri, Slok 76, Lord Shree Swaminarayan says that those who are unable to observe the vows for the entire 4 month period are permitted only to observe these vows during the month of Shravan.

On Purnima (full moon day), or during the course of the month, the star 'Shravan' rules the sky and for this reason, the month has been named Shravan. The Shravan month traditionally marks the beginning of the monsoon season in India, during which time the evenings are dark and the skies remain cloudy.
