Ghanshyam Maharaj's Divine Manifestation

Map of India
Detailed Map

In Northern India, there is a village called Chhapaiya, on the banks of the river Saryu, near the holy town Ayodhya. The land here is very green and lush. Trees with tender sweet fruit grow naturally here. Colourful birds and butterflies fill the sky with colour. The birds chirp sweet songs and spread an atmosphere of happiness all through the area. Chhapaiya is only a small village, yet there are many temples dotted around within it. Little cottages and even a few multi-storey mansions line the narrow winding streets.

Dharmadev and his wife Bhaktidevi lived in this beautiful village. They were both good people and spent their time worshipping God. The supreme God became pleased with their devotion and granted them a blessing that He Himself would manifest at their home. At just after 10 o'clock at night on Monday the 3rd April 1781 (Chaitra sud 9th Samvat 1837), the supreme Lord Swaminarayan gave darshan to Bhaktidevi. He was completely surrounded by a dazzling bright light, divine tej. Immediately, this form vanished and the Lord took the form of an adorable baby. The Lord had manifested at the home of father Dharmadev and mother Bhaktidevi.

At the very same time, the skies filled with the sound of beating drums and pleasant-sounding trumpets. This was due to the deities who had come for the darshan of the Lord, travelling on divine aircrafts. A gentle breeze filled the air with the sweet smell of the sandalwood and flowers that the deities showered over Chhapaiya.

The entire village began rejoicing as news of this new arrival spread. Lamps were lit in all the houses. Children danced in the streets. Ladies started singing with joy as they headed for the home of Dharmadev, carrying silver plates filled with holy kumkum, gulal, coconuts, flowers, perfumes and other expensive gifts. Brahmins gathered outside the house and chanted sacred verses.

Dharmadev offered gifts to the Brahmins and all others in appreciation of the divine gift that he had just been given. The supreme Lord Swaminarayan had come down onto this earth. With Him, He had brought happiness and joy to the whole village of Chhapaiya.
