Swamibapa Education Centre

The teaching of Gujarati started way back in 1960’s at the old temple on Kirinyaga Road. Classes were held with a view to teach the young generation basic Gujarati language so that they could read our religious scriptures and understand the glory of Lord Swaminarayan and as well preserve our culture. Classes were held once in a week for an hour and a half.

Along with Gujarati, children were also taught basic religious education, devotional songs, and brief biography of our Supreme Lord Shree Swaminarayan, Jeevanpran Bapashree and Jeevanpran Swamibapa.

The classes were not on regular basis, but those who attended the few lessons available benefited a lot.

In the month of April 2002, the classes were commenced at the newly built H H Swamibapa Hall with a formal setting up of a school. Gujarati is now taught at all levels i.e. nursery, primary and advanced level. Students sitting for Gujarati at GCE O’ level  achieve high grades in their final GCE exams.

English classes were also started with a view to teach the elder members of our society to communicate in English.

It was during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Nairobi Murti Pratista on 26th December 2002 ,that Acharya Swamishree blessed the school with the name "SWAMIBAPA EDUCATION CENTRE". He blessed the Education Centre and delivered His divine blessings, saying that we should teach our children Gujarati and preserve our ethnic culture because most of our religious scriptures are written in Gujarati. Acharya Swamishree said “to understand the Supremacy of Lord Shree Swaminarayan and His Divine Hierarchy we should be able to read and write Gujarati fluently, especially the young generation”.

Currently the school has a total of about 85 students and teaching staff of 12, all rendering voluntary services. There are nine different groups of varying levels.

The school timings are 4.45pm to 6.20pm every Saturdays. The last half an hour is dedicated to religious education.

Apart from the academics, the students are also encouraged to participate in extra co-curricular activities, namely, singing, dancing, acting and public speaking. In December 2006, the students, under the guidance of their teachers, performed spectacular religious dramas entitled “Laxmibai No Chamatkar” and “Vandrao Ne Methipak.” More recently, in October 2007, during The Swamibapa Shatabdi Mahotsav in Maninagar – India, they performed another religious drama entitled “Sarvajan Valabh Swamibapa.” It was another super hit production.

The Centre at present feels proud of its very young and talented students who can recite verses in Gujarati from the Holy Scriptures during parayan recitals. They can also sing devotional songs with great zeal to please Lord Swaminarayan who has showered His Divine blessings upon this Education Centre through  Acharya Swamishree.
