Why are there five aartis during the day?
Help

The day can be divided into five main sections and an aarti is performed during each of these.

  1. Mangla aarti takes place early in the morning to awaken the Lord.
  2. Shangaar (7-8am) aarti happens after the Lord is dressed with garments, jewellery, crown or paagdi, etc.
  3. Rajbhog aarti (9-10am) is performed after offering the Lord His main thaar each day.
  4. Sandhya aarti (evening) is performed at sunset, just before the evening thaar.
  5. And finally Shayan aarti (9-9.30pm) is performed at the end of the day before the Lord rests.

These five aartis are performed in shikhar bandh mandirs (main temples such as Maninagar), at hari mandirs (smaller temples such as those in villages) and at peoples’ homes, only mangla aarti and sandhyaa aarti are performed.
